Unfortunately these devices, and all such contact-less infrared thermometers, are very sensitive to the surface being measured. This is not the fault of the machine, i. Read more t's just physics. After some initial readings that were not what I expected, I checked it by using a pan of boiling water and another thermometer. Knowing the barometric pressure I knew the theoretical boiling point of the water, and this agreed within a degree with the QM7221 and the second thermometer. However It was very noticeable that the readings from the QM7221 varied significantly depending on the surface it was aimed at. When given a suitable surface it was within 0.5C of the theoretical temperature, but on other surfaces it varied and wouldn't give a stable reading. I checked this by using a piece of steel in the barbecue, and a shiny polished area gives a completely different (MUCH lower) and often much less stable reading than a rusty or matt black painted area. It must be said that the inability to deal with shiny surfaces is described in the manual, with the advice to paint shiny articles matt black. The manual also gives examples of the emissivity of different materials so that the machine can be adjusted to suit. If you want to measure surfaces that aren't shiny metal it would probably deserve a better score than that, especially as the limitation is described in the manual and is simply down to basic physics. This is because all the components inside them are not 100% efficient and the wasted energy is typically converted to heat. As such, inefficient appliances often produce significantly more waste heat than efficient ones (for example, hot halogen down-lights, poorly insulated ovens, and so on). 2. Improve your comfort Radiant temperature is a very important aspect of thermal comfort. Use your infrared thermometer to identify what parts of your building are letting in too much heat in summer or sucking it all out in winter. Measure the surface temperature of a window and compare it to an internal wall. Can action be taken to better manage heat loss or heat gain through the window? 3.

Reduce your heating and cooling costs Most people will find a temperature of 24-26 degrees C to be pleasant in summer and 18-20 degrees C suitable in winter. These are good levels to have your air conditioner set at. Setting the air conditioner lower in summer typically does not make it work any faster: it will just use more electricity because the compressor will remain on for longer. It's not incredibly precise - you can't use it to measure someone's temperature, for example - but it is accurate enough to test whether an HVAC is working or if your cat is still alive. I bought each of my adult children one as a stocking stuffer because they are handy to have, interesting, and fun.It gave consistent and expected readings. I also did not receive batteries with this product. Pulling the trigger turns it on and it automatically turns off after a little while. The red laser can be turned on and off using the button on the left. I like that this uses AAA batteries as opposed to a 9v battery. I use rechargeable AAA's in this with no problem. I used this for soap making and am happy with my purchase.I just use it to get a quick temp so I know if I need to increase or decrease the heat for our bearded dragon. So much easier to get an accurate temp reading with the gun versus a probe digital thermometer. The thermometer is easy to use and no contact with the food is required. Therefore also no cleanup. Love the auto turnoff feature, too.

I also tested my gas oven which I suspected was the incorrect temperature.Right again, it is about 20F cooler than the setting says. Great tool and worth the money spent.Had to spend over an hour trying to figure out how to change from Celsius to Fahrenheit - but figured it out eventually, ( instructions didnt help)You aim, squeeze the button and it reads the temperature. Not difficult at all.Luckily the nose piece (black plastic bit) is held on with clips and pretty easy to pop off. Once off I found the lazer diode to be sitting fairly loose in it's barrel. I put 2 wraps of sctch tape to fill the gap, put the diode in a proceeded to press the fire button, hold it down and tried my best to get the lazer mor aligned with the built in sights on top of the casing. Next thing I need to do is check for accuracy of temp read-outs. I've got another digital thermometer that has a thermister lead that lets me check appliances. I'll check the accuracy and see about adjusting this non-contact thermometer and come back and update this review. I'm pretty sure that it's pretty close to accurate but I'm not 100% positive.I verified it's accuracy vs a digital thermometer and an infrared camera and it gave a similar result. The best feature of this tool is that it takes AAA batteries. I strongly dislike any tool that take the old 9 volt batteries. My only complaint is that the laser pointer part of it points about 10 degrees to the left of where I'm actually pointing it, but that's a minor flaw for an otherwise decent tool. I would give it 4.5 stars because of this issue, but I can't give half star ratings on Amazon!Have since used it to measure the temperature of many other things. Quite accurate as well. Much better than those remote floating ones that keep getting water logged and ruining the electronics inside. In order to navigate out of this carousel please use your heading shortcut key to navigate to the next or previous heading.

Additionally, another exception occurred while executing the custom error page for the first exception. My guess is that the outside temp sensor is defective. You only have one amp so you won't be able to take advantage of all the FX on the Digitech as a lot of them are designed for stereo. The Digitech manual shows guitar into the Digitech and output from the Digitech into input of any guitar amp. Since you have a Marshall and can already get some great sounds by running your guitar straight into the Marshalls input, you would probably be better off using your Digitech in the FX loop. Start out with the effects level on the Marshall all the way down. Do the same with the Digitech with both the input and output levels. (Read the manual carefully) I think the choice of the Digitech isn't that great because it is already trying to reproduce a lot of what you can already get with just your Marshall but with a little experimentation and some careful adjustments you should be able to add to the sound of the Marshall. Hope this helps.Never throw the instructions away. Keep them near your digital thermometer. Never push or cram the probe into the body. Forcing it causes pain, especially if there is swelling in the ear canal or rectum. As a matter of fact, older ranges often had 50 to 60 degree swings in temp. I never mess with ovens which are within 10 degrees of set temp. (when checking the temps, make sure to take the readings after the oven has cycled on and off at least three times, and use a good digital oven calibration thermometer) Press the bake key again and hold it for 3 seconds.

It seems to read about 30deg high. ETI's Calibration Laboratory technicians use industrial black bodies to calibrate infrared thermometers with certification traceable to National Standards. UKAS accredited certification of IR Thermometers may be obtained from ETI on application and quotation. The process of validation, where an instrument is comparison checked for accuracy, is what is described here. If the reading of an instrument is found to be inaccurate when validated using a calibrated thermometer it must then be sent to a laboratory to be repaired or re-calibrated. Why validating a temperature on an IR instrument is different to calibrating a penetration probe Infrared thermometers only measure surface temperatures and should therefore only be used as a quick guide. This is because the accuracy of the measurement is affected by many factors and variables such as the emissivity of the surface, type of material, transparency, colour and reflectivity ( read our full guide to getting accurate IR readings here ). The best way to control the emissivity and temperature of a surface, ensuring that you get the true reading of an infrared thermometer, is by using a solid black body. This minimises most external factors and prevents the temperature from changing too quickly.

Emissivity As seen in this blog post on the accuracies and limitations of infrared, emissivity plays a huge role when calibrating IR thermometers. Depending on what you’re pointing your infrared thermometer at you’re going to get a variation in emitted infrared energy. Emissivity is a measure of a material’s ability to emit infrared energy. It is measured on a scale from just about 0.00 to 1.00. Generally, the closer a material’s emissivity rating is to 1.00, the more that material tends to absorb reflected or ambient infrared energy and emit only its own infrared radiation. Click here to learn more about emissivity. What equipment is required to validate the accuracy of an IR instrument Here at ETI we have specifically designated laboratories for our calibration of infrared thermometers. We have put a lot of time and resources into ensuring that the temperature and humidity is exactly right for each process to begin. We also have controlled hot and cold black body sources in order to achieve the accuracies stated within the product’s specification. We are able to provide a traceable certificate of calibration on all ETI manufactured infrared thermometers. The thermometer comparator consists of an aluminium cup with a solid matte black base. An infrared thermometer can then be held above the entrance of the cup to take the temperature of the surface of the base. How to validate a temperature on an IR instrument Ensure the comparator and infrared thermometer are clean and free of any debris or substances that could affect the reading ( read our full guide to cleaning and storing your IR device here ). Place the thermometer comparator on a flat surface. Insert the Reference Thermometer probe into one of the base test holes and allow it to stabilise. This could take any amount of time, depending on the response time of the inserted probe. If the IR device has adjustable emissivity, ensure it is set to 0.

95, the correct setting for the matte black surface of the Thermometer Comparator. Point the thermometer straight down into the bottom of the comparator and take a measurement. What temperature can an IR instrument be validated at The accuracy of an infrared thermometer can be checked using a comparator at any stable temperature. Thermal stability Using an IR thermometer at hot or cold temperatures will increase the possibility of thermal instability. Other infrared thermometers may have a different value. Don’t change the temperature surrounding the comparator before validation or the surface temperature may differ from the internal temperature. Do be aware of the external factors that influence taking a correct IR reading from the comparator, such as moisture, frost and debris. Don’t position the infrared thermometer too far away, or at an angle, when taking the temperature of the comparator as it may provide an inaccurate reading. Do take the measurements as quickly as possible, to prevent the surface temperature from changing. Don’t forget that the thermometers require time to acclimatise to a different environment. Step 2: Add very cold water until the water reaches about one half inch (1 centimeter) below the top of the ice. Step 3: Gently stir the ice mixture and let it sit for a minute or two. Step 4: Create a well of open water where no ice is floating or tamp the ice down so there is a layer of open water at the top of the glass. Step 5: Make sure your infrared thermometer is set to an emissivity setting of 0.95 or 0.97. Step 6: Hold your infrared thermometer so that the lens or opening is directly above and perpendicular to the surface of the ice bath. Note: If you hold your infrared thermometer too far from the surface of the ice bath or hold it at an angle, your measurement will include the sides of the glass or container or even the table it is resting on and give you an inaccurate reading. If the results of your ice bath test are within your unit's manufacturer's listed specification, you are good to go. If, however, you get a result that is outside the listed accuracy specification, you should contact the manufacturer. All rights reserved. All prices USD. Back to Top. Interest free!
